How to rank locally on Google in Australia (2026 playbook)

A practical, no-fluff guide to ranking a local business on Google in any Australian city. The exact steps we run for our own clients.

Local search is the most reliable acquisition channel for Australian service businesses. Done right, it compounds month over month — unlike ads, which stop the moment you turn them off. The catch is that "doing local SEO" is misunderstood: most agencies sell a generic checklist that performs the same in Newcastle as it does in Notting Hill. It doesn’t. This guide is the actual playbook we use, end to end.

1. Start with intent, not keywords

Every "SEO Sydney" search has a different intent behind it — research, comparison, urgent need. Map the buyer journey for your business before you write a single page. We use a simple 4-stage model: aware → considering → comparing → ready. Build pages for each.

  • Aware: "what is [problem]" — long-form guides, no hard sell
  • Considering: "how to [solve problem]" — frameworks, comparisons
  • Comparing: "[your service] vs [competitor]" — honest, transparent
  • Ready: "[service] [suburb]" — landing pages with clear CTAs

2. Google Business Profile is half the battle

Most local businesses leave 70% of GBP’s ranking value on the table. Do this monthly without fail.

  • Post weekly (offers, news, photos)
  • Update services and products with descriptions and prices
  • Answer every Q&A — and seed your own common questions
  • Reply to every review within 48 hours, good or bad
  • Add 5+ original photos per month, geotagged
  • Keep hours and holiday schedules current

3. Build suburb-level pages

"Plumber Sydney" is a different keyword to "plumber Bondi", which is different again to "plumber Surry Hills". Google scores them separately. Build a page per suburb you actually serve, with unique copy — 600+ words minimum — about that specific suburb’s context, common issues you fix there, local landmarks, and your team’s actual presence in that area.

4. Citations from genuinely local sites

Forget directory spam. Earn citations from real Australian sites that matter to your industry — local chambers, supplier lists, state trade bodies, regional press. Five real Australian citations beat 500 generic global directory links every time.

5. Schema markup is non-negotiable

LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Review schema in JSON-LD on every page. This is what powers your map-pack listing, FAQ rich snippets and breadcrumb-enriched results. Yes, it’s technical. No, you can’t skip it.

6. Speed: the silent ranker

Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) are confirmed ranking signals. Most Australian sites we audit fail one or more. The fastest fix? Move off WordPress page builders to a modern stack like Next.js. The slower fix? Optimise images, kill render-blocking JavaScript, lazy-load below-the-fold content.

7. Measure what matters

Don’t track keyword positions in isolation — track calls, form submissions, direction requests, store visits. The job of SEO is revenue, not vanity rank reports. A live Looker Studio dashboard with GA4 + GBP + Search Console connected gives you the full picture in one place.
